Don’t Waste Your Marketing Dollars

Posted on February 17th, 2010 by Chad Kroeker

Had a chat with a client today about a great deal in a magazine, caused me to want to write about it. Maybe some of you will find this useful.

Let me paint a picture: An advertising sales rep calls you and says there’s a really great deal on an ad in a really great magazine. This ad was $2500, now it’s $500. It’s cheap, so you throw an ad together at the last minute and make the spend.

Or, you decide you need a website. You’re not sure why you need a website – but everyone else has one. You call around, find the cheapest web guys, and get an online presence in a matter of weeks. What’s the problem with that? You’re still marketing yourself, right?

Absolutely you are – but you’re not marketing yourself well. And more importantly, you’re throwing your money away. At ClearMotive, many of our clients come to us and say “We need an ad/website/brochure/business card/whatever, and we need it now.” And instead of saying yes, we instead ask why.

What is big and yellow and lives in a recycle bin?

What is big and yellow and lives in a recycle bin?

It’s 2009 and I just received my new Yellow Pages directory.  I arrive home to find it sitting on my doorstep, like a package from a friend or a special delivery.  I pick it up and carry it inside setting it carefully on the counter.  I walk to the other end of my kitchen and open the laptop that is a staple on my eating bar and I  review the events of the day.

As I surf through my favorite news sites with a possible indulgence in a retail site or two, I glance down the bar and see the directory – the big, cumbersome annoying directory – that has been a staple in my household since I was a kid and I ask, “do I need this, is it of use to me, why do I keep it, did I even open last year’s?

Clicking for Dollars

Clicking For Dollars

Can you buy the number one spot on Google? Well, here’s the thing: you can and you can’t.  You can’t call up Google and  ask for the number-one spot for  “women’s sexy shoes.” But you can make a wise marketing spend on a thing called SEM.

A lot of our clients – and entrepreneurs in general – offer really great products that, if you used them, you’d be hooked. But it isn’t enough to just tell someone about them. They have to be seen in action.
